August Athlete Of The Month

Congratulations to our August Athlete Of The Month, Sarah Calhoon! Sarah has been part of the 317Fit community since June 2018. Since then we’ve watched her challenge herself, embrace new skills, and put her all in to her workouts. Please join us in celebrating her efforts this month!

Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I was always curious about trying CrossFit but I was so scared to join because I wouldn’t be strong enough. I met Ashley when she brought her little girl Remi into Kidz Depot where I work and she told me all about it and had me come for a consult and the rest is history. I fell in love with it!”

What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“My favorite movement is probably power cleans. I don’t enjoy the bruises I get from them but it’s such a beast mode feeling when I hit the clean. I get this adrenaline rush and it’s exiting!”

Least favorite movement or workout?
“My least favorite movement is probably anything gymnastics related. That’s my weakest subject but I recently started focusing more on those movements and slowly get better at them.”

Long term and short term goals:
“A long term goal of mine is to just get more proficient at all the movements and keep getting new PRs! I would love to inspire people and help them with their goals and tell them they can achieve anything. A short term goal of mine is to do a handstand. I’m terrified of the movement but I’m trying to get there.”

What would you tell someone that is on the fence about CrossFit and is scared to try?
“If someone is on the fence about trying CrossFit, I would tell them that I have been there. You look at all these people lifting a barbell and you look at yourself and say I can’t do that. I’m here to tell you can! All it takes is for you to try. We all have to start somewhere.”

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
“My proudest accomplishment so far is box jumps! I was TERRIFIED of doing them but I conquered my fear and just went for it.  I fell down a couple of times but I got back up and tried again!”

Who are 3 people you look up to and why?
“3 people I look up to. My mom definitely. She was a single mom who raised me to be the woman I am today. I’m so appreciative of everything she did for me. I also look up to Ashley Bacsu. She is such a great role model and mom and she showed me that anyone can do CrossFit no matter your fitness level. She pushes me to do better and I couldn’t be more thankful for her. Her kids are the best too! The last person I look up to would probably be my boss Misty Grant. I met her when I was 17 and in high school when I started working at my job. She has watched me grow as a person in all aspects.  We share the same passion and have the same heart for people and children. She puts her heart and soul into her employees and her business and I am so blessed to have an amazing woman to look up to.”

What do you love most about CrossFit 317?
“The thing I love the most about CrossFit is the people. When they say CrossFit is a community they aren’t kidding. These people have watched me grow and have seen me when I’m most vulnerable and lift me up and help me push through. They are my family and I’m so proud to say that.”

What is a quote or motto that you live by?
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” (Wayne Gretzky) – Michael Scott
