Today we’re getting to know Shanell Woodard. Shanell recently completed our Kick-Off program and is now a regular in our 9am CrossFit class. Read on to get to know her, including details about her upcoming documentary.
Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“Hello all, my name is Shanell Woodard and I’m a 2003 graduate of Ben Davis HS. I have 2 amazing children. My daughter Sanaa is 11 years old, and she keeps mommy busy with sports. My son Sage is 3 years old, and I thought I had this parenting thing all figured out until he came along! He keep me on my toes for sure! Lol!
I currently own and operate a jigsaw puzzle company call Piece of Heart LLC and we specialize in taking your most memorable pictures, creating a collage then turning it into a puzzle. I also just finished up a documentary/inspirational film “If I Can, So Can You!” I went out and filmed 26 African American entrepreneurs here in this city to tell their stories on where they are from and how/what it took to get to where they are. This inspired me to do to shed light on the positivity, and to show teen/young adults that no matter where you grew up/situation you’re in, this isn’t you final destination. Life’s about choices, and it’s never too late to change for the good.
My premiere is August 3 at The Hatch in Broad Ripple. It’s going to be awesome!
What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“I’ve always loved a challenge. Doing things that look impossible has always excited me. I can remember in high school always wanting to lift weights, but I was just playing around. Of course that was 16 yrs ago, and I always wondered what it was like to actually knew what I was doing.”
Why did you choose 317Fit?
“Fit317 has been on my radar for a few months now. My being a lady kept me from coming on in. I tried to wear a dress and got completely frustrated at the weight I had gained. That was it. I came right in.”
Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“My first impression was the facility was very clean, staff and others were really warm and welcoming. The classes at first seemed like a piece of cake 😳 but oh was I mistaken 😂, and the groups are challenging, but I absolutely love it! Two days in a row seem totally impossible, but I’m going to go for it!”
What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“As far as physical change to my body, I haven’t seen again, but I tell you what, when I leave my workouts, I feel like the Incredible Hulk 😂😂😂”
How has your training at 317Fit impacted your life outside of the gym?
“I’ve pushed myself to eat better after I worked out, but I’m still trying to stop eating snacks as I work late at night.”
What has surprised you the most about being part of the 317 community?
“What has surprised me thus far is me actually being able to do some of the workouts. Most of the time, I see different workouts and say “WOW” to myself, not knowing that I will be able to do it too.”
Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“I haven’t had a moment yet, but as I come more and watch others, I know it’ll come.”
What advice would you offer someone that’s considering 317Fit?
“If I was to offer any advice, I would say “Go steady! Don’t try to over do it until you know you can handle it!” I went hard and fast! Couldn’t move correctly for 2 days. Lol”
Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“In my free time, I love to travel with my children. We plan a trip once a month. I also play the acoustic guitar, but I’m a beginner. FYI-I’m looking for a new instructor as my old one went out on tour. I also love to giveback, because I feel with love and helping other, we can change the world.”
One last really important question. If you owned a boat, what would you name it?
“If I owned a boat, it would be named “Triple S” in some fancy way. Myself and my children’s first letter of our names.”
