Congratulations to Maricarmen Reyes, our June Athlete Of The Month! Maricarmen joined 317 in December 2015 following a couple of years of CrossFit at another gym. She’s been on fire this spring and we’re excited to celebrate how her hard work is paying off!
How did you get started with CrossFit?
“I started CrossFit by accident. I was looking for another gym and found a CrossFit gym instead. I started the introductory classes and I got hooked.”
Favorite movement or workout?
“My favorite are deadlifts. I also like power cleans, front and back squats.”
Least favorite movement or workout?
“I do not do well with snatches and the assault bike. I struggle with everything endurance and I do not like burpees.”
Long term and short term goals:
“Long term goal: To get stronger, faster and improve my form. Short term goals: Get double unders back, be more consistent on toes to bar and work harder to improve my lifts.”
What would you tell someone that is on the fence about CrossFit and is scared to try?
“CrossFit is the best thing I could have ever done. There is always a coach to guide you and every workout will be scaled to your ability. It is all about variety and intensity. Be consistent and you will see progress.”
What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
“To do things people my age don’t do. I am really proud of my pull-ups during Murph! And being able to PR many of my lifts lately.”
Who are 3 people you look up to and why?
“My parents and my husband. My mom was a very independent and strong woman, an excellent cook, very crafty, an entrepreneur and an excellent mom. My dad was the handyman, the hard worker, he had great work ethics. He loved the outdoors and playing sports. He taught me to be a hard worker no matter what and to be resilient. Them both raised six children that become responsible adults.
And last, but not least, my husband who is my greatest supporter, a fun and strong guy that is always there for me.”
What do you love most about CrossFit 317?
“We are like a big family, from the coaches to the people you workout with. We all support each other, workout hard and have fun.”
What is a quote or motto that you live by?
“Never give up.”
