Today we’re getting to know Rhett Cecil. Read on to learn more about how he got his start in CrossFit and what he enjoys about being part of the 317 community.
Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I am happily married to my wife, Amanda, and we’ve been married now for almost 19 years! We have two boys, Cooper and Cole, and they are just the lights of our lives. We try to have balance in our lives, but it seems that we’re always going somewhere – traveling for work or to sporting events for the boys and trying to get in one extra workout a week!”
What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“In all honesty, I saw how excited Amanda was about the work she was putting in at CrossFit 317 and she had been pushing me to get back into the gym, so I finally just came to one of the classes. After the class, I signed up for my instructional workouts with Andrew and have been off and running ever since!”
Why did you choose CrossFit 317?
“Me choosing CrossFit 317 was all about my wife. Amanda loves her time at the gym, which was really interesting for me to see, and clearly was having some very positive results. Simply, I had never gone into any other CrossFit gym and the opportunity to experience things that Amanda was sharing with me (Workouts, Classes, Instructors, People, Sense of Community) clearly intrigued me. I think, looking back, that I very fortunate to have found this community of people who call CrossFit 317 home.”
Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“My first impression of CrossFit 317 and the workouts was that I was very much out of shape! As a former college athlete, I thought I would be able to maintain a modicum of fitness, but after my first few weeks with Andrew, I quickly realized I was terribly wrong. But what really stood out and does so to this very day is the community of people, the supportive and engaging environment of the classes, the desire of our instructors to see us achieve levels of work we ourselves may not feel possible. CrossFit 317 is such an unique environment and I simply love the gym and the people!”
What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“Well, this is a good question. I have dropped 20 lbs, but I am seeing more muscle growth now in my late 40’s than I had in my late 30’s. My physical transformation is not as extreme as Amanda’s (of which I am super happy for her and proud of her!), but I can definitely see more muscle definition and my strength has increased a lot since that first day with Andrew. Heck last week, I actually saw my ab muscles again!”
How has your training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“I feel more healthy now than I have in quite some time. Having back surgery last year, I worried about it limiting my ability to be active, to be a member of the gym, to have a quality of life that I desired. Heading right back into the gym was therapeutic for me and I can’t wait to see what adventures Amanda and I are going to take on together once our boys leave the nest!”
What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“The best surprise of being part of the CrossFit 317 community is the people and their willingness to welcome me into the family at the gym. I love the familial aspect of our community of people and I am genuinely excited to see folks at the gym, like Kenny and MC, Doug and Kelly Weaver, Andrew, Lori, Jake, JR, Danielle, Mary, Kirk, Sarah, Ben, Areca, and countless others. CrossFit 317 is more than a gym and I am thankful to have a group of people who are supportive and caring and genuine in their affection for one another.”
Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“I don’t know if there is one moment when I knew CrossFit was for me – I think it is more a series of moments that cemented for me that CrossFit and CrossFit 317 was something that I wanted to have in my life. The camaraderie, the feeling of accomplishment, the shared misery of some of the workouts, the community – these are the things and moments that drew me in and continue to do so today.”
What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“Don’t worry about thinking of what you can’t do, think about what you can do and focus on continuing to move. To this day, I have not done one really good squat snatch and there is doubt I ever will, but that does not limit the work I can get in and the improvements that I have made. Amanda gave me a great piece of advice that I still tell myself to do before each workout – Just Keep Moving.”
Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“I love to hang out with our family and I try to make everyone of our boys events as I want to be an active participant in their lives. I love to read, especially military history and am a serial entrepreneur. I love to fly fish and am going to jump into urban and suburban fishing this year, so that is pretty exciting! I also love tagging along with my wife when she travels as she has and does take us to some really cool places!”
One last really important question. If you owned a boat, what would you name it?
“Because I am a consummate smart-ass, I would probably name the boat Fin & Tonic!”
