“…everyone at 317 is so friendly that it didn’t feel intimidating at all.”
Jade Keane joined 317 in August 2018 on the recommendation her friend and fellow 317 member, Amanda Cecil. Today we’re getting to know her a bit better and celebrating her PRs from this morning in the clean & jerk and back squat!
Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I was born in South Korea and grew up in Iowa (go Hawks!). After graduating from AIB College of Business in 2004, my family and I moved to Indy for my job. I am a court reporter (stenographer) for a reporting firm in downtown Indy. Yes, I can type really fast, haha! My husband and I have been together for 17 years and married for 13. We have two kids, Jonah and Charlee, and two fur kids, Maya and Rosie.”
What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“After going to a bootcamp-style gym for a year and a half, I was getting bored with the workouts and wanted to do something different. I have always liked working out with a barbell, but the gym I went to rarely used them. There was a CrossFit gym across the street from there so I thought I’d check it out. I knew nothing about CrossFit when I walked in there. I had only seen the CrossFit games and didn’t even know what WOD stood for.”
Why did you choose CrossFit 317?
“After trying out a few boxes, my friend Amanda persuaded me to check out 317. Right away, I could tell that 317 was different from the other boxes I had been to. It can be intimidating to walk into a gym where you don’t know anyone, but everyone has been very welcoming and so nice! Also the coaches are very attentive of proper form which has been great for me as a newbie.”
Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“The cleanliness of the floors and equipment is something I noticed right away. It was nice to walk into a gym that didn’t have chalk and other people’s sweat on the floor. I also love the workouts. They’re different every day and always challenging.
And the coaches are amazing. Coach Jake brings a whole new level of energy at 5:30 in the morning and has encouraged me so much since day one. Plus he has stellar dance moves. Coach Andrew is one of the most patient coaches/trainers I’ve ever met. He’s very good at explaining how to slow the movements down so you have proper form. He’s also really nice and won’t laugh at you (even though he probably wants to) when you get smacked in the face while doing wallballs.”
What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“I haven’t seen a ton of physical changes because my diet has most definitely not been on point, but I have noticed a big difference in my strength and mobility. My back squat PR was 15 lbs. heavier after going to 317 for a couple of months.
What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“I was surprised by how welcoming and encouraging everyone is, and it isn’t cliquey which has been really nice. Some boxes can be intimidating, but everyone at 317 is so friendly that it didn’t feel intimidating at all.”
Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“There was a workout where we had to do 50 double unders or something like that, and I hadn’t done a double under since I was in elementary school. But after trying to do them and failing miserably, it motivated me to want to practice them more. The gymnastics part of CrossFit is actually really fun!”
What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“Do it! Come to a class and check it out! You don’t have to get in shape to do CrossFit. There are scaling options to fit everyone’s fitness level.”
Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“I love working out, reading, hiking, and spending time with my family. I’m a huge animal advocate, and I am slightly obsessed with golden retrievers. Game of Thrones is my all-time favorite TV show, and I love cheesy romantic comedies. Also Ryan Reynolds is my forever celebrity crush.”
One last really important question. If you owned a boat, what would you name it?
