Member Monday

Brownsburg Fitness facility“I now sleep better, have more energy and I don’t feel like I just sort of gave up like I had before.”

Today we have a special Member Monday story to bring you. It’s one of finding the motivation to start again, celebrating milestones of improved health, and learning that fitness isn’t just a one time opportunity. Read on to get to know 317 member, Mike Paul!

Tell us a little about yourself. Let’s get to know you.
“First of all I am from Michigan, so the only difference between me and the people from Indiana is I have seen a lot better college sports teams. I work for a regional airline here in Indianapolis and my job is sort of hard to explain, but if you may of had a delayed flight its possible I had something to do with it. I have loved Indiana ever since I got here in 2007 and I love golf. Golf channel, YouTube of golf . . . maybe addicted. Not willing to seek help.”

What prompted your return to 317?
“I came into CrossFit 317 a few times. This time I am going to stay. The first time I wasn’t committed and the first signs of a small injury like one that I should probably just ice, I was like yeah that is the end. Luckily I live very close to CF317 and I always found myself peeking over when driving by. Always noticed how many cars, how many people were outside pushing sleds, etc. I think one of my motivations was when my Pastor mentioned CrossFit more then once in his sermons, along with Instagram posts, it turns out most of my Pastors were doing CrossFit. I then came back to CF317 in January of this year, incredibly out of shape and quite depressed looking for some change. I completed a “Kick Off” class with some noticeable results. I wish I would of just stayed but I was naive and thought well I can do this on my own now. Well that was a lie!! Luckily I returned in September. So far its been a better and more productive experience, probably cuz I came in even more motivated.”

What has this experience been like thus far?
“I came in sort of knowing what to think. I go to the 0530 class and it has energy, lots of it. I found myself being very thankful after I went and the workout was done. Its always easy to want to stay in bed at 0530 but I now know that the benefits and the regret of staying home. I don’t think the place has changed much. The second room had artificial turf in it and is now rubber mats but still a lot of familiar faces, and I could see some noticeable results on members they achieved since I left.”

You’ve posted about some pretty exciting results, please share some of those with us.
“I have seen some results since January, I am guessing one that I am really proud of is the night before was my last Pepsi. I haven’t looked back to any soda, okay maybe an occasional Vernor’s if I am not feeling well, but that might be a Michigan thing. I have Instagrammed a few photos not so much of me but some results.. It wasn’t that long ago I ordered two seat belt extenders for flying on planes, yes they’re available on Amazon and it saves you the embarrassment of nearly dislocating your shoulder trying to fit in an original seat belt or the even more embarrassing asking the flight attendant for an extension belt. Well I no longer need those. If you know anybody who wants em, drop me a line. Right now I am looking forward to my final weigh in and I hope its also something I can share.”

Do you have any advice for anyone that might be at a similar point in their life that you’d like to share?
“I can say this as far as advice. I was in a dark place when I was tipping the scales over 350 lbs. Yeah you read that right. I really needed to “shock my system” and I found that here. I know I was somewhat depressed and all of my smiles were forced. I still have a long ways to go and I may never get to where I am supposed to be, but I will not go back to where I was. I think people who may be on the fence about starting a routine, I can tell you this, I have years, years where I was just going thru the motions. It’s really not about the life you give up, it’s about the life that you will live after!!
I now sleep better, have more energy and I don’t feel like I just sort of gave up like I had before.”
