Congratulations to Josh Milbrath, our October Athlete Of The Month! Josh got his start at 317 through our six week Burn It Off Challenge and has been consistent with his workouts since day 1. Read on to learn more about his success in the challenge.
How did you get started with CrossFit?
“I knew very little about CrossFit other than what I had seen with the CrossFit games on tv. I never really thought of CrossFit as an option, then I saw the Burn it Off Challenge video on Facebook with Andrew. I really needed to make a change and decided it couldn’t hurt to come in to learn about it. After talking with Lori, I decided that there wasn’t any reason why I shouldn’t at least try out the challenge. After the first week of burn classes, I was pretty much hooked.”
Favorite movement or workout?
“I don’t always think it’s my favorite after the workout is complete, but I love seeing the 15 minute AMRAP of 50 bike calories, 40 air squats, 30 sit-ups, 20 push-ups and 10 burpees on the schedule. It’s the very first workout I did in the burn class and I love seeing the progress I’ve made each time we complete it.”
Least favorite movement or workout?
“Burpees, although I’m slowly learning to despise them a little less.”
Long term and short-term goals:
“Short term goals – as I’ve only completed burn classes so far, I’d like to do the intro training soon so that I can start doing the CrossFit classes.
Long term goals – I haven’t set any specific long-term goals, but I’d like to maintain a healthy weight and continue to improve with workouts and movements that I struggle with.”
What would you tell someone that is on the fence about CrossFit and is scared to try?
“Just try it out, every workout can be scaled to your level of fitness. That’s what is great about CrossFit, both beginners and experienced members can work out in the same class because it’s all about pushing to yourself to your own limit. I really wish I would have started sooner and you probably will too.”
What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
“I started out with the Burn It Off Challenge in April, since then I am down a little over 50 pounds and feel so much better both physically and mentally. I’ve never been a runner, but as second accomplishment I set a goal of running a 5k in less than 30 minutes and recently ran one on my own in 28:30, hoping to run a similar pace in an upcoming 5k race.”
Who are 3 people you look up to and why?
“This is the hardest question for me to answer as it’s not something I’ve really thought of, but I’d have to say my dad, and not just because he’s much taller than me, but he always worked so hard to make sure that my sisters and I had everything we needed, even though we might not have always gotten everything we wanted.”
What do you love most about CrossFit 317?
“The workouts are great, but it’s really the people, the coaches and members are just awesome. I’m your stereotypical introvert who is often uncomfortable in unfamiliar settings, but the people at CrossFit 317 makes the gym feel warm and inviting which helps reduce the level of uncomfortable. The amount of encouragement everyone gives each other is not something I had expected, but when you are struggling through a workout, that encouragement really helps you to keep pushing yourself. I’ve tried to make a conscious effort to encourage others as I know how much it helps me.”
What is a quote or motto that you live by?
“Don’t give up, don’t ever give up.” Jim Valvano
