Brownsburg Fitness facility

“…everyone I knew that was in really good shape seemed to do CrossFit”

Today we’re getting to know Eric Howland, a regular member of our noon class. Read on to learn more about what he thinks of 317, and his advice for anyone thinking of joining CrossFit.

Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“My wife, Jami, and I have been married 8 years in October.  We have a two year old named Miles and a yellow lab, Bosco.  We live in Franklin, about an hour south of the gym but I work in Brownsburg.  I work for Captive Aire selling commercial HVAC equipment and own a commercial roofing business.”

What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“Initially it was because everyone I knew that was in really good shape seemed to do CrossFit – and then I watched the CrossFit Games and got hooked.”

Why did you choose CrossFit 317?
“It was really convenient from my office and I knew Ashley from high school.”

Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“The facility itself is really nice – it has everything you could possibly need and nothing you don’t.  I love the programming – I think it does a good job of making the workout accessible for people who are still learning movements but it also pushes people who have been doing it forever and in great shape.  I typically workout at noon so Andrew is the coach most of the time.  He does a great job of explaining and coaching people through the workout and making sure everyone feels included and motivated.”

What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“I’ve lost about 7 pounds and all my clothes fit much better.  All of my lifts have gotten back up near my lifetime PR’s and its only been about 3 months.”

How has your training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“I have a lot more energy to play with my son and get things done around the house.  It is also the best way I’ve found to help manage stress and anxiety.”

What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“The facility, I have been a part of two previous CrossFit gyms when we lived in Colorado and neither one was as large or as nice.”

Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“After I did my first workout in 2014, it was the closest thing I had been able to find to the feeling of a wrestling/football practice.”

What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“Don’t be nervous.  Theres not going to be an judgement – its just a group of people trying to get better and everyone is at different spots in their level of fitness.”

Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“I spend most of my time playing with my son, but I love reading science fiction, watching high school and college wrestling, and traveling – especially to the mountains, any mountains.  Mountains are so much better than the beach.”

One last really important question. If you owned a boat, what would you name it?
