Brownsburg Fitness facility

“CrossFit 317 is, by far, the best gym community I’ve ever been a part of. The coaches are top notch and being at 317 is what pushed me to see how strong I can become! The entire community is welcoming and encouraging, regardless of where you are on your fitness journey!”

When former member Joe McKinney reached out and wanted to set up a time to come in and discuss returning to CrossFit 317 we were happy to oblige. There’s always room in our community for familiar faces and old friends. Today we’re learning a bit about why Joe returned to CrossFit 317 after taking some time away to focus on powerlifting and what his experience has been like as he gets back in to #WODlife.

Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I currently work for ABC Supply Co., a wholesale distributer of exterior building products. I have been in the construction industry for the past 13 years. Prior to that, I served in the Marine Corps as an electronics technician. I have been married since 2011, I have a 5 year old son, 17 year old step-daughter and an 18 year old daughter. I grew up mostly in Denver, CO as an Air Force brat and moved to the west side of Indy in 1996. Played baseball at Ben Davis and graduated in 1998. Currently live in Brownsburg, since 2007, with my wife Angela, son Jackson, step-daughter Josephine and my cat Booger!”

What made you consider rejoining a CrossFit gym?
“I wanted to come back to CrossFit after taking about a year off pursuing powerlifting. I got  pretty strong, but I put on a lot of unhealthy weight. I was in need of some condition and I am certainly not a treadmill or steady-state cardio guy! I enjoy lifting weights, so what better cardio than lifting weights fast?!”

Why did you choose CrossFit 317 each time?
“CrossFit 317 is, by far, the best gym community I’ve ever been a part of. The coaches are top notch and being at 317 is what pushed me to see how strong I can become! The entire community is welcoming and encouraging, regardless of where you are on your fitness journey!”

Please share some of your impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“The facility has undergone many changes since the first time I came in. Ashley is committed to continuously upgrading and adding equipment. It seems like she is constantly investing back in the gym and new things are always happening. A lot of the coaches are members that became coaches and are very well trained and understand the community we have at 317! There are other CrossFit boxes near me, but I would never consider going to a different one. After being away for over a year, every coach and all the members have welcomed me back and told me how excited they are to see me back!”

What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“So far, I’m still alive, so that’s a good start coming back after a year!”

How did your prior training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“When I was focusing on CrossFit prior to leaning towards powerlifting, I was able to do a lot more with my son and not run out of breath climbing a flight of stairs. Being strong doesn’t necessarily mean being fit. I would like to find a mix of both!”

What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“The community is like no other. I come from playing team sports and military service, the camaraderie of this community is the closest I’ve found to that feeling!”

Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“I knew pretty early on that this could be for me. I often feel like I’m not going to make it, but somehow I do and come back for more. Your fellow members and coaches will not allow you to quit and that is something important for me because if I try to run or do some cardio at a standard gym, nobody is there and those forms of cardio suck!! I’m still not a runner and probably never will be, but there is so much more conditioning we do at CrossFit. Again, I love lifting weights and lifting them fast is conditioning I can get on board with!”

What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“The only advice I can offer is come to a box and try it for yourself. Don’t always listen to your peers about whether it is or isn’t for you. You’ll never know if you don’t give it a shot.”

Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“I enjoy pretty much all sports, but baseball has always been a passion of mine. I am coaching t-ball again this year and later in the summer, I will be playing in a wood bat league for old guys 30+. I also get on my Harley as much as possible and enjoy riding to places I’ve never been!”

One last really important question. If you owned a boat, what would you name it?
“I would probably name it ‘Queen Bea’ after my grandma. My Grandmother’s name is Beatrice and she is probably one of the greatest people I’ve ever known!”
