March Athlete Of The Month

Brownsburg CrossFit gym

“PRs are great but it’s the friendships and fun times that I will remember a lot more.”

Join us in congratulating our March Athlete Of The Month, Justin Hobbs! Justin is a regular in classes at CrossFit 317 and always willing to help out at our CrossFit 317 events. Currently he’s serving as co-captain for team Cirque de Sore Legs in the Intramural Open. Read on to learn more about how Justin got his start in CrossFit (hint: a certain sister may have had something to do with it.)

How did you get started with CrossFit?
“Well…. I actually started help building a gym for some crazy girl that was out of state and had this idea for a “box”. Before really understanding the concept behind CrossFit and having not really focusing on a gym routine since college, I decided that i needed to get back in that routine and focus on my health, however after only taking part for a month or two I stopped until after the  Ashley & Kirk’s wedding.  It was there I realized the community that was involved within CrossFit was just to addictive for me to hold out any longer.”

Favorite movement or workout?
“I think it is pretty obvious that I enjoy heavy lifting with the bar (ie. Back Squats, Snatch, Clean) and pushing my limits.”

Least favorite movement or workout?
“I have several movement and workouts that I don’t like however I know that every time I am doing them, they are making me better but if I never see ‘Good Mornings’ again in a WOD, I will sleep a little better that night.”

Long term and short term goals:
“Games Athlete ….. jk…My short term goals have a long term effect.  I would like to get myself in a physical condition that I don’t tire easy and can crush a workout and not having to spend the next 15 mins staring at death.  The main thing that will help me obtain that is losing weight which would be my short term goal while maintaining a healthy weight is a long term goal.”

What would you tell someone that is on the fence about CrossFit and is scared to try?
“Why are you standing on the fence? That’s more dangerous than CrossFit. Step out of your comfort zone because you will always ask yourself what if , if you never did.”

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
“I would have to say the relationships gained! PRs are great but it’s the friendships and fun times that I will remember a lot more.”

Who are 3 people you look up to and why?
“My wife most definitely by the way she leads our family and takes care of me and the kids all while rocking the whole CrossFit thing as well.  The other two people are the Moms and Dads at 317.  It’s tough and I never completely understood it until I had kids of my own, the balance of providing and caring for your family and also yourself is very challenging but you all are killin it and you should be proud even though there are days that you just want to give up.  Each and everyone of you are a positive influence on me and more people than you realize. Keep killin it!”

What do you love most about CrossFit 317?
“All of it! From the members to the coaches to the workouts to the events.  Walking through those doors makes you a better person be it physically or mentally.  You will never leave without a positive thought or result.”
