Brownsburg Fitness facility

“I pretty much knew after day one that I had found my place! One of the best decisions I’ve made was walking in that door!!”

Today we’re getting to know Sherri Malless, who has been a part of our CrossFit 317 community since fall 2015. Keep reading to learn more about Sherri’s experience at CrossFit 317 and how her workouts benefit her in her professional life.

Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I have lived in Brownsburg for around 20 years and have worked for OneAmerica for 26! I guess I find what I like and stick with it! I grew up in a small town in southern Indiana. Most of my family still lives there. Went to college at IU in Bloomington. After college, still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I went to a paralegal school in Philadelphia. That was quite an experience! I worked at Baker & Daniels for 3.5 years and have been with OneAmerica since then!”

What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“I have always been athletic and was pretty good about regularly exercising. Would mostly run and actually ran a full marathon in Chicago in 1999. I was looking for something different.  And, something that would help to tone my entire body.”

Why did you choose CrossFit 317?
“I drove by CrossFit 317 many times on my way to/from work. I kept thinking, ‘I’ve got to check that out!’  At the time, I had fallen into a rut where exercise was not a priority. I will admit, I was fat and out of shape! I was a little intimidated until I actually walked in the door! I never turned back! Fell in love with the workouts and, more importantly, the people.”

Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“My first impression of CrossFit 317 was how friendly and inviting everyone was. I like that it is a smaller, more personal gym. I love how everyone encourages each other and it’s ok that we are all at different levels. The coaching is awesome and quite necessary for me! Thank goodness they review the lifts and movements with us each time…sometimes when I walk into class after a long day at work, my brain seems to shut down!”

What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“My physical changes from when I started are pretty dramatic! Not just in appearance but in my flexibility too. I vividly remember, while learning wall balls, Ashley had to place a wall ball under my derriere and tell me to squat until I felt it! I have long ago advanced beyond that and proper squatting just comes naturally now, thanks to my increased flexibility.  My arms have more definition than they have had in a very long time! I love it!”

How has your training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“Because of CrossFit 317, I have a new and much more exciting wardrobe. I have received numerous compliments from family and friends and have been told many times, whatever I’m doing…keep it up! I have more confidence and that certainly helps me in my career whether it is meeting with clients or presenting in front of multiple people.”

What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“I have met so many awesome people that I would not have met otherwise! I’m grateful for the camaraderie and the laughs we share. I know, without a doubt, we have a very special group at 317! We just seem to “click” as a group.”

Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“I pretty much knew after day one that I had found my place! One of the best decisions I’ve made was walking in that door!!”

What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“Do it!! I will admit that I was a little scared and intimidated but it was all in my head. Walking in and taking that first class dispelled all my fears. So, I would tell anyone considering it….Just Do It!!”

Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“Between work, chores and CrossFit, there isn’t a lot of spare time to fill. I try to spend time with friends and family and I also like to travel. I will be fulfilling a bucket list item in March when I travel to Australia!”

One last really important question. If you owned a boat, what would you name it?
“If I owned a boat, I would name it Serendipity.”
