September Athlete Of The Month

This month we’re recognizing the efforts of Polet Arellano for Athlete Of The Month! Polet has really dialed in her focus these past couple of months which has resulted in making some serious progress towards meeting her goals! Join us in saying “Congratulations!” to Polet when you see her in class.

How did you get started with CrossFit?
“CrossFit was introduced to me by a former teacher and now friend, Kelly Wallace aka Wallace. She invited me to her gym to check it out. I had no idea what was CrossFit, so it’s fair to say I did not know what I was getting myself into. Wallace failed to mention they were in the middle of Hell Week. So, my first day of CrossFit involved tire flipping, tire pulls, heavy barbell carries, and whatever the Coach told us to do. It was pretty much all of CrossFit in one hour, it was painful and I understood why it was called Hell Week. Crazy thing, I actually enjoyed it, went back, and so CrossFit journey began!”

Favorite movement or workout?
“I LOVE barbells! I’m the happiest when a barbell is involved in a WOD! The heavier the merrier! #liftlikeagirl” 😉

Least favorite movement or workout?
“WALLBALLS. Here’s the thing, I’m short; therefore, every time I throw that ball I am literally in the air trying to hit that target! There is also the times when the ball likes to land on my face..so yeah, they suck.”

Long term and short term goals:
“Short term goal is to meet my 2017 goals. I am so close!

My long term goal involves my nutrition. I want to be able to have a balance between my nutrition and my fitness. In the long run, I want to take everything I am learning about both fitness and nutrition and apply it to my life to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

What would you tell someone that is on the fence about CrossFit and is scared to try?
“The most you’ll get other than fitness, it’s a great community that will turn into your family. Try it out, we are ALL at our own beginnings and levels.“

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
“Even though CrossFit has been part of my life for the last 3 years, my nutrition part was not on the healthier side. This past month I took on the challenge to do WHOLE30 diet with a friend. This means 30 days of no sugars, no grains, legumes, dairy, and gluten. Avoid additives, all processed foods, alcohol and eating out. After the 30 days, you reintroduce all of these foods and see how your body reacts to them. In other words, WHOLE30 means a ton of time, discipline, and patience. I am incredibly thankful to have successfully completed the 30 days! I lost 12lbs, and gained SO much knowledge about healthier, whole foods. It shaped me into being more disciplined in my nutrition, be more conscious and aware of the foods I am eating. I could not have done this without the incredible encouragement from my support group! This is a huge accomplishment in my nutrition since the start of my CrossFit journey!”

Who are 3 people you look up to and why?
“I am a believer and identify myself in Jesus Christ. I highly respect many people and admire their passionate work ethic, but the one I look up to will always be Jesus. As people, we will always fail others. We will never be able to meet anyones expectations, no matter how much we love those people. This is why I depend on God, and His faithfulness, love and grace.”

What do you love most about CrossFit 317?
“The people, for sure! Since the day I stepped in to CrossFit 317 I immediately felt welcomed. It is such a great community full of different personalities, and backgrounds all coming together as a family! I love the encouragement from fellow athletes and the support from coaches! There is always laughter, dancing, and whole lot of fitness!”

What is a quote or motto that you live by?
“‘You are loved’
It is a constant reminder of my faith to God. It is my reminder that I am called to love others and to do all things to glorify Him. I am so fiercely loved that He placed me here at CrossFit 317. Everything that I am, everyone in my life, and the reason of where I am it is because God loves me and this was His plan. I am loved. I am SO thankful He placed Wallace long ago in my life and introduced me to CrossFit because it led me to CrossFit 317, a community that has helped me grow in so many ways.”
