“…those at CrossFit 317 really do make you feel welcome and celebrate those small victories with you. “

CrossFit 317 member, Steph Chastain, gets real about how CrossFit has changed her. From self-esteem to self-acceptance, CrossFit pays off in ways that many might not expect. Read on to learn more about Steph’s journey!

“I was always an athlete growing up and very competitive. I played volleyball and softball for my school, club teams, travel teams…any team I could. In college I joined the Army and continued staying active in sports in intramurals.  Since then I’ve struggled to find something that I enjoyed as much and believe me, I’ve tried many things!  I love the competitive side of it – both with others and myself. When I see others doing something, I try to do it too. When I know I did ‘this many’ or ‘this much’ last time, I try to beat it. I enjoy the healthy competition CrossFit offers and love the fact that those at CrossFit 317 really do make you feel welcome and celebrate those small victories with you.

The other side to my story is my battle with myself. I’ve always had low self esteem and a very negative body image. This got even worse after having my son. I found it extremely difficult to lose the weight and began to hate myself and the way I look more than I ever had. I tried many things to change this but couldn’t find something I would stick with. People always say ‘I wish I was as skinny as I was when I said I was fat’ and it’s true!!! I look at pictures and think, ‘You dumbass….you looked great!!! What the hell were you thinking?!?!?!’  I decided it’s time to really do something about it.

That being said….I think I have found a system that might actually work for me!!!  I’m no longer focusing on calories, sizes, or the scale. I feel better about the way I look (not good… but better!!!) and get very excited to see how my muscles are developing!  I’ve accepted the fact I probably won’t be a size 4 again, and instead am focusing on being healthy, lean, and happy with myself.  I’m making better decisions with food and am proud of myself for as long as I have kept it up. I’m not letting myself off the hook this time….I can’t. I’ve worked way to hard to get to this small stepping stone and know I have much further to go. Can’t wait to see where I end up!!!”
