“I know when I go in that I’m going to get a good workout and that I’m going to leave feeling better than when I came in.”
CrossFit 317 member, Megan Burton, takes a break from her busy life as a psychiatric health provider, mom, wife, and recent grad to share how her workouts at CrossFit 317 serve an important role in her week. Read on to get to know Megan!
What were your first impressions upon joining CrossFit 317?
“To be honest, I was really nervous about joining. I had this picture in my head of what CrossFit members would look and act like, and I thought I was getting in over my head. After my first day, I was amazed at how wrong that mental picture was. Everyone was very encouraging. I thought I would leave my first day feeling weak and inadequate, but instead I left feeling empowered and strong.”
How has your training at 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“Overall, I am just a healthier person, both mentally and physically. As a psychiatric health provider, I preach on the importance of self-care all day long. CrossFit is my self-care. I could list a hundred ways that CrossFit brings balance to my hectic life. It gives me the energy to accomplish things at work and home, the motivation to make healthy choices, and the desire to keep improving myself.”
How does CrossFit 317 meet your health and fitness needs?
“CrossFit 317 has been the best choice I have made for my health because it pushes me to do things that I would never have done before, and so I am seeing results that I have never had in the past. The coaches make sure you perform the exercises correctly, and they and the other members are always supportive and encourage you to push yourself. The combination of the knowledgeable coaches and the encouraging environment is really what has helped me to improve and stay motivated.”
Is there a particular class time that you enjoy?
“I would LOVE to come in for the morning classes, but my work schedule prevents me from doing that. So, normally I like to come to the 4:30 class. I also enjoy the Saturday morning class because I really enjoy partner workouts.”
Do you have a 317 memory that you would like to share?
“I really enjoyed my entire time in the New You Challenge because we became such a tight-knit group. We were all coming from different backgrounds and levels of fitness, but we bonded from sharing that 6 week experience. Outside of that, one memory that sticks out in particular was when I was working with Coach Andrew on power cleans a few months ago. I had never lifted before CrossFit, and I still get nervous about lifts as I continue working on my form. During this class, I was feeling apprehensive about the workout, but I can remember him really encouraging me to keep adding weight. He said, ‘You are stronger than you think you are.’ That really resonated with me, and it made me feel more confident in myself. I try to remind myself of that every time I come into the gym. It really helps me to keep improving.”
What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
“I love the people at 317. Everyone is there to lift each other up and cheer each other on. I also really like that I don’t have to plan my workout. I know when I go in that I’m going to get a good workout and that I’m going to leave feeling better than when I came in.”
If asked to sum up 317 in one word or phrase, what would it be?
“My ‘happy place’.”
What advice would you offer to someone that’s new to CrossFit?
“I would say to just show up and give it your all. As long as you are challenging yourself, you will see results both inside and outside of the gym. Remember that we are all rooting for you to succeed!”
Outside of the gym, what activities and hobbies do you enjoy?
“Outside of the gym, I work, go to school and have 2 young children…so there isn’t much time for extra hobbies. When I’m less busy, I like to cook, run, read, and raid Hobby Lobby for crafty things.”
