Alan Devney began his CrossFit 317 story in October 2016. Starting out in our Kick-Off program, Alan continued with our New You Challenge that began that November. Now a full member of #Team530AM, Alan shares how his training in the gym improves his life in a multitude of ways.

What were your first impressions upon joining CrossFit 317?
“The energy of the workouts is very high! I was in the New You class and I could not wait to join the main class with the music cranked up. The movements are big and if I’m honest a little intimidating.”

How has your training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“I am 50 years old and had never participated in workouts of this nature. I was a little apprehensive. Ashley walked me through an orientation and then I participated in the New You Challenge. The message here is that 317 walks you through the movements so that you are ready to join the main classes with confidence. After three months I find that I sleep much better, I stand up straighter, my endurance in improving, and I can do things like deadlift a deer into the bed of my truck all by myself. It surprised even me when the strength was there that I did not know I had gained.”

How does CrossFit 317 meet your health and fitness needs?
“It has revealed where I am naturally strong and where I need to focus. My clothes fit better and I find myself considering my diet and life choices daily so I have improve my CrossFit performance. I am in a very intense position with my work. I find my stress management to be greatly increased by working hard. Who knew!”

Is there a particular class time that you enjoy?
“I am a member of the 5:30 AM MWF team. Love to start the day working hard three days a week! Jake’s energy is always high!”

Do you have a 317 memory that you would like to share?
“Nickelback Fridays! Love it! Jake cranks Nickelback while we workout. It makes me stronger. And the way that people in the regular classes took the time to introduce themselves to those of us that has just started.”

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
“The group atmosphere! The team provides support that you may lack when you work out by yourself. I find that I work harder and get much more out of each class due to the encouragement I get from the room.”

If asked to sum up CrossFit 317 in one word or phrase, what would it be?

What advice would you offer to someone that’s new to CrossFit?
“Try it!  You will be impressed with yourself!”

Outside of the gym, what activities and hobbies do you enjoy?
“Bike riding, mountain hiking, hunting, wood working, barbecue smoking.”
