Today we’re getting to know loyal #Team0530 member, Ashlee LaPaugh. Recently Ashlee got her husband started at CrossFit 317, something that we love to see. Read on to learn about how CrossFit has become an important part of Ashlee’s life both inside and outside of the gym.

Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I am a dental hygienist. I have been married for 22 years and have 2 daughters. My oldest is a junior at Ball State and my youngest is a senior at Brownsburg High School.

In September, we will be welcoming a foreign exchange student from Germany into our home for the remainder of the school year.  We are excited about that!”

What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“I joined The New You Challenge in January. I had always heard CrossFit was a great work out.  But I thought I was too old and out of shape to actually do it. I liked the idea of everyone being a beginner in the New You program.”

Why did you choose CrossFit 317?
“I joined 317 because of the New You program. Also, I had some friends that were big into CrossFit and I knew that this was their gym, so that made me feel more comfortable about trying it out.”

Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“When I walked in the first time, the music was blaring and people were lifting,rowing, and cheering each other on. I was kind of scared and I thought…no way can I do this!  I have no idea how to do any of what they are doing! But then Lori explained how the New You Challenge would introduce me everything and that I wouldn’t be the only one who was new. Once I started the program, Coach Andrew was great at explaining the workouts and I became more confident each week. However, once we were done, I was scared to start the ‘big girl’ classes! Once again, the coaching staff made all the difference! Coach Jake was really great and made me feel welcome right away.  He was very good about watching me, correcting me, and helping with the modifications that I needed to do.”

What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“I am getting stronger every day. I find myself able to do things that I wasn’t able to do before CrossFit. I can lift and move things around the house that I would have to have help with before. I also have better mobility than when I started. I still have a long way to go, but little by little, I am getting there!”

How has your training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“It has definitely helped me step out of my comfort zone. Joining the New You Challenge was the first big step. If you would have told me a year ago that I would be doing CrossFit, I would have said you are crazy! And if you would have said I would be working out at 5:30am, I would have really thought you were nuts! But here I am, part of team 0530!

It has also helped me a lot with mobility issues. As a dental hygienist, I am bent over patients all day and used to have a lot of upper back pain midway through the day. Now, I only feel that if I have had a really long day at work. Also, my shoulders and wrists are not as stiff as they used to be.”

What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“I think the biggest surprise is the support. I am definitely one of the older, heavier people in my class and I usually finish last! haha! But I love how everyone cheers me on and doesn’t judge me for  being old and slow. I was really worried about being judged because I have never been an athlete or done anything remotely close to CrossFit or any sport for that matter. But instead, they are all pushing for me to finish and want me to succeed as much as I do!”

Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“I think it was when I finished the New You program and I was sad that it was over. I had been counting down the weeks, excited to not have to get up early anymore. Then when it was over, I knew that I needed to keep going!”

What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“Step out of your comfort zone and do it! If I can, anyone can. The coaches are great and will find a modification if you need it. Don’t let fear get in the way of improving your health!”

Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“I enjoy spending time with my family. Both of my girls are swimmers, so I spend a lot of my free time at swim meets. I also enjoy spending time outside in the summer and walking my dogs.”
