Athlete of the Month

Congrats Melody on being our next Athlete of the Month

First, tell me a little bit about yourself!

I grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana and graduated from the University of Southern Indiana in 2001. I moved around a bit after graduation, living in Corpus Christi, Texas and Chicago. When living in Chicago I met my husband (Mike) and a year later we moved to the Indianapolis area, eventually settling in Brownsburg. I’m a full-time marketing professional and a full time mom. I have three kids – Anabelle (8), Emilia (4) and Abram (3).

How did you get involved in CrossFit?

I was having trouble reaching my weight and fitness goals on my own at a traditional gym. I had heard about CrossFit from friends and social media so I researched, found CrossFit 317 and decided to give it a try.

What was your first WOD/experience?

“Annie” – I’m not sure if it was my first actual WOD, but it was my first very memorable one! I was the last to finish and I remember thinking that I might die before it was over.

When did you start coming to CrossFit 317?
July, 2013

Is this the first CrossFit you’ve worked out at / how long have you been CrossFitting for?

I’ve been CrossFitting for about six months and CrossFit317 is the only box I’ve been a member. I try to visit different boxes when I’m traveling. I’ve visited CrossFit locations in Orlando, FL; Naperville, IL; and two in Valparaiso, IN.

When did you realize that CrossFit was right for you?

The first week of kickoff class. I knew right away that CrossFit 317 was the best fit for me. Nowhere else would I be as challenged, as motivated and as supported as I am with this community.

What are you short-term and long-term CrossFit goals?

Short term I’d like to just perfect my movements. It took me a very long time to muster up the courage to do (of all things) box jumps and I’m just now comfortable with it. There are some other basic things – rope climbs, handstand push-ups, toes to bars, etc. that need improvement.

Long term I’d like to be able to Rx at least 90% of my workouts.

What is your biggest accomplishment?

Other than my kids, one of my biggest accomplishments was completing a mini marathon 12 weeks after having my son in May of 2011. I ran the race for my father, who had lost his battle with colon cancer the year before. My sisters and I raised around $7,000 for the American Cancer Society via their DetermiNation program.

What is your favorite / least favorite WOD/movement?

Favorite WOD: Any of the Hero workouts
Least Favorite WOD: Filthy Fifty
Favorite Movement: Overhead Squat
Least Favorite Movement: Hollow Rocks – after three kids my body doesn’t want to cooperate on these

What do you do for a profession outside of CrossFit?

I’m a Product Manager at Trends International, managing their sticker, decal and gift wrap categories. I’m also an Advisor for AdvoCare.

What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?

We are a big sports family. My husband is an Associate Athletic Director at Butler University, so most of our free time is spent at games, sporting events or traveling to watch the Bulldogs play somewhere!

Do you eat Paleo or Zone?

I try to eat Paleo 75% of the time 6 days a week. Saturdays are my free day.

What is your favorite paleo/non-paleo meal?

Paleo – Salmon
Non Paleo – I love anything with wing/buffalo sauce slapped on it – buffalo chicken dip is my favorite.

Do you use any supplements?

Yes, I use a lot of AdvoCare regularly – Spark, Catalyst and CorePlex most often. I’m also getting ready to start some of the Performance Elite line of products.

Give me 3 fun facts about you!

  1. I’m a BIG hair band fan. You’ll often find me jamming out to XM’s Hair Nation in my car
  2. I started my career in the ticket department of the Chicago Bulls. It was my first real job after I earned my degree
  3. I keep a blog and although I don’t update it as often as I like, it’s a fun glimpse into my life.
