Congrats Dave on being our August Athlete of the Month!

First, tell me a little bit about yourself!

I am 43 years old, I have three children (1 daughter, 2 step sons). I have been married to my wife Stephanie for almost 9 years. I have two dogs name Bob and Sam. I work for Dow AgroSciences as Healthy Oils Group Leader.

 

How did you get involved in CrossFit?

I was working out on my own and wanted to find a new way to challenge myself. I watched the Crossfit Games on TV and started looking for a box in the area.

What was your first WOD/experience?

Thrusters and burpees. I think it was 5 sets of 7 for time. Thought I was going to die.

 

When did you start coming to CrossFit 317?

January 2013. With my travel schedule, I had some difficulty finding a box as a few wanted me to come on a fairly strict schedule. When I saw the sign for Crossfit 317 I had to check in out and am so happy that I did. Kirk and Ashely have been great in working with my schedule. I will also add that our box has a tremendous sense of community. I have stopped in a couple of boxes while traveling and did not feel anything close to what we have.

 

Is this the first CrossFit you’ve worked out at / how long have you been CrossFitting for?

This is my first Crossfit experience

When did you realize that CrossFit was right for you?

Right away. Although the first workout was rough, I wanted to get back in right away and challenge myself. I like the constantly varied movements that we do. Keeps it fresh and challenging. I get a great deal of motivation from being around the other members and seeing the encouragement that everyone provides.

What are you short-term and long-term CrossFit goals?

Short term – continue to improve my form on all of the key movements and learn how to do a ring muscle up. Long term – you know, I am a little bit older (43 years old) than some of the members, so making a run at the Masters division is a goal.

What is your biggest accomplishment?

Family. Although managing a blended family has been very tough at times, I take a great deal of pride in playing a role in the life of three children and enjoying it all with my beautiful wife.

What is your favorite / least favorite WOD/movement?

Favorite WOD: Diane (with a love/hate for Fran)
Least Favorite WOD: anything with burpees
Favorite Movement: deadlift
Least Favorite Movement: burpees

What do you do for a profession outside of CrossFit?

I manage business development for a division of Dow AgroSciences. I work with the food industry on products they manufacture that contain oil or use oil in the cooking process. We have developed very healthy, highly functional, canola and sunflower oils, which allow companies to make products healthier by removing trans and saturated fats.

What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?

I enjoy landscaping and yard work. I have always loved being outside. Also, any sporting activity.

Do you eat Paleo or Zone?

Not really. I limit carbs and have significantly increased my intake of veggies and fruits.

What is your favorite paleo/non-paleo meal?

pizza or sushi

Do you use any supplements?

Morning – AMP Wheybolic Exteme 60 (protein shake) Pre-workout – Advocare Mass Impact, Post work-out – Advocare Post-recovery and BCAA’s.
