Congrats Ryan on being our next Athlete of the Month!

First, tell me a little bit about yourself!

My Wife, Renea, and my son, Evan, and I live in Avon, IN. I grew up on the Westside of Indianapolis my whole life and went to Ben Davis HS, and went to college at IUPUI. I met my wife while playing softball at Midwest Softball Park when we were on a mutual friend’s team together.

How did you get involved in CrossFit?

After I received an alarming health assessment at work for our health insurance I knew I needed to take action on losing weight and getting healthy. A few guys in my office where really big into CrossFit and were talking about it all the time. I was really seeing the success they were having meeting their fitness goals and I started to ask a lot questions. The team oriented workout atmosphere and variety of workouts really peaked my interest.

What was your first WOD/experience?

I started out in the 317 Intro-class in July. I quickly learned how out of shape I was getting tired during the warm ups.

Is this the first CrossFit you’ve worked out at / how long have you been CrossFitting for?

This is only Box I have ever been to – 4 Months.

When did you realize that CrossFit was right for you?

I think after the first week of the Intro class is when I decided that Crossfit was going to be the best way to meet all my fitness goals. During that first week I think I lost nearly 8 pounds right away. Just working off that small amount of weight during that first week made me feel a whole lot better, and I was hooked.

What are you short-term and long-term CrossFit goals?

I just recently meet one of my short term goals to drop 40 pounds. I think for the long-term I want continue to challenge myself to lose another 20 pounds to get my goal weight. I want to continue building on the foundation that has been laid thus far and see how far I can take my fitness level.

What is your biggest accomplishment?

My son Evan.

What is your favorite / least favorite WOD/movement?

Favorite WOD: Any Saturday morning team -style workouts (I am sure they have names)
Least Favorite WOD: Barbara – Meet her on open gym night and I am not a fan.
Favorite Movement: Deadlift
Least Favorite Movement: Power Snatch and Snatch Balance (Burpees would have been a easy answer)

What do you do for a profession outside of CrossFit?

I am an Energy Trader for ACES in Carmel, IN. I manage two portfolios/municipalities in Northern California. I plan out everyday how those cities or load zones are going to receive their electricity or “keep the lights on”.

What are your hobbies outside of CrossFit?

I love to golf (would golf everyday if could). Hunting, Fishing, Softball, and watching football.

Do you eat Paleo or Zone?

About 65% Paleo – I could eat steak every day. I have really tried to cut a lot bad Carbs out of my diet (it’s hard).

What is your favorite paleo/non-paleo meal?

Recently I have found my new favorite vegetable in spaghetti squash.

  • My Wife and I really enjoy playing golf together.
  • I was James Vaughan’s (CrossFit 317 Coach) 8th grade basketball coach at Fulton Jr High.
  • Huge Colts and IU Fan.
