Join us in congratulating Evan Sandullo, our CrossFit 317 July Athlete Of The Month! Since joining in February 2017, Evan has settled right in to the CrossFit 317 community. We’re happy to have him here and thrilled to give him the title of AOTM. Read on to learn what Evan gains through his time in CrossFit classes.
How did you get started with CrossFit?
“I started CrossFit in 2014 after we moved to a little town in IL. I had been a multi-sport athlete in HS and College, but I had drifted away from sports and fitness for several years. When we arrived in Princeton, I was shocked to find a CrossFit gym in such a small town. It was just a fit for me and provided the competitive drive I had been missing.”
Favorite movement or workout?
“Anything body weight…I love Cindy. It is a perfect workout for me. After that, I would say deadlifts are a close 2nd.”
Least favorite movement or workout?
“Without a doubt….any overhead lift. After a couple of shoulder surgeries and a lack of flexibility, they are my nemesis!”
Long term and short term goals:
“Short term is to get back into the shape I was in before we moved back to Indiana. I need to rebuild my strength and drop about 10 more pounds. Long term it is to do some CF competitions and get back into obstacle course racing.”
What would you tell someone that is on the fence about CrossFit and is scared to try?
“I have told many people that the perception of CrossFit is far from reality. Once you get past the 1st trip, the atmosphere, the camaraderie, and friendly competition will drive you to go further than you ever have. It is a mental game….showing up is 90% of the battle.”
What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
“In 2016, I was finally talked into competing in a small CF event in IL. After 18 months of training, I figured I should try and see what I could do. I was able to win the event and set a couple of PR’s at the same time. It provided the proof that what we were doing was working.”
Who are 3 people you look up to and why?
“Two of the people that I admire the most are my mother and my wife. My mother, throughout my life, modeled what hard work looked like with her drive and determination. I admire my wife for her selflessness, humility, and the hard work she puts into being both a mother and musician. I am very proud to be her husband. As to the 3rd, I have several mentors and accountability partners who are people I look up to as they help keep me focused and accountable to being the best person I can be.”
What do you love most about Cross fit 317?
“The coaches and the people. When we moved I was away from CF for 8 months and it was a challenge to come back. After my first class, I was impressed with the quality of coaching and the way I was welcomed in by the other athletes which keeps you wanting to come back.”
What is a quote or motto that you live by?
“As to a motto or quote…I do not have a specific one that I live by. I try to make my family proud in all the things I do and to do everything with the upmost integrity.”
