“There was something about this “CrossFit” thing and  I quickly became addicted to it!!”

Meet CrossFit 317 member, Alicia Albers! Alicia has a pretty amazing testimony to share. From a car accident 8 years ago that threatened to end her enjoyment of running to back to running for fun, CrossFit has served as the catalyst to help Alicia get back to doing the thing she loves. Read on to learn more about Alicia’s amazing story!

Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I am teaching 5th grade at Deleware Trail Elementary. This is my sixth year teaching, before moving here I was teaching 1st grade. I love getting to watch those “light bulb” moments go off in all my students, it is what makes teaching the greatest job! I have a six year old little boy named Karter. He is my pride and joy!! We recently moved to Indianapolis from Northwest Kansas for my boyfriends job with DOW. We love grilling out with friends, spending time watching football, or out playing sports as a family. We are loving our move to the bigger city!”

What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“Eight years ago I was in a horrible car accident that changed my life forever. I wasn’t sure if I would ever be able to run for enjoyment again. After almost two years after my accident I started running slowly, but my body just couldn’t keep up like it use to be able to. Then I had to have surgery on my foot to repair some damage that had happened in the car accident. So, there I was again out of commission, unable to run just because. My body had been through so much and had lost any and all muscle. After having my son Karter I knew I needed to do something to help me gain muscle back, something to make me feel strong again. I decided I would try out our local CrossFit gym in Colby, KS. I heard lots of great things about CrossFit and thought maybe this would be that “family” that “community” to help me. I was worried about all the knee issues I had, my body not being strong, or able to keep up. All this would impair me from accomplishing things within the gym. But, after a year of being there I started to realize, “Wow” I was getting stronger, I was starting to see muscle definition again, my knees weren’t hurting as bad, and most of all my heart was getting stronger every day and running was becoming easier for me!! There was something about this “CrossFit” thing and  I quickly became addicted to it!!”

Why did you choose CrossFit 317?
“Before moving to the Indianapolis area I knew I needed to find a gym and one that I could call home. After looking around I knew CrossFit 317 would be that gym for me.”

Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“I really liked the energy that first afternoon I walked in. I was really nervous starting at a new gym, I had gotten so close with friends and members at CrossFit Colby, I just didn’t know what to expect. Coaches and members were so welcoming of me and my son Karter who joins me every day! All the coaches have been so helpful, very knowledgeable, and motivating for all the WODS. Thank you!”

How has your training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“As I mentioned before, I really enjoy running. I like spending Saturday mornings running either a 5K and 10K with some of my girlfriends. By working out every day it has made my heart stronger and I’m able to run at ease. CrossFit overall has made me a stronger runner over the past 4 1/2 years.”

What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“The members and coaches being so welcoming, I feel like I have been working out here far longer than 2 months.”

Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“Yes, when I realized how much my body had endured and then I was able to overcome all of it through CrossFit.”

What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“Take that one hour every day for yourself… in the end you will be saying “Thank you!”

Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“I enjoy playing games with my son, going on runs, traveling, and cooking.”
