Member Monday

James Spink is our feature for today’s Member Monday. He started with us in August through our Kick-Off program and can usually be found working out in one of our morning classes. Read on to get to know more about James!

Tell us a little about yourself. Career? Family life? Let’s get to know you!
“I am 40 years young and grew up in upstate New York (way upstate a 1/2 hour from Canada). Before starting our family owned business Bin There Dump That, roll off dumpsters for residential and commercial clients, I spent 15 years on the business side of motorsports. I am married to my wife, Lori, and we have a 5 year old son named Kanon and a boxer dog named Votto (after the Reds first baseman)”

What made you consider joining a CrossFit gym?
“I drove by the new location for several months and would see all the different classes working out. I wanted to get back into working out but wanted something different than a standard gym membership. The proximity of the new location makes it ultra convenient as it less than 2 miles from where we live in Brownsburg.”

Why did you choose CrossFit 317?
“Honestly I was very impressed by you when I initially called and had a million questions. You took the time to answer them all and were patient with me. I enjoyed the “trial” class and instantly new this would be a great fit for getting back into working out.”

Please share some of your first impressions of the facility, the workouts, the coaching, and the class environment.
“I love the diversity of the members and the friendliness of all involved. Everyone from the employees to the folks working out its been a pleasure to get to know them all. Not knowing what a CrossFit facility looks like I honestly didn’t know what to expect on my first visit.”

What physical changes have you seen thus far?
“I think I am just under a couple of months into the program. I try to average 3-4 days a week and typically go to the 9am or noon class. I have learned a lot in the short time, especially when it comes to working out my legs and lower body, that was often a spot that was skipped or not done when working out on my own.”

How has your training at CrossFit 317 impacted your life outside of the gym?
“It has helped me get in better shape for the Reds Fantasy Camp that I do yearly in Arizona in January. I’m certainly more flexible which will help when trying to keep up with our 5 yard old and I have also put a stronger emphasis on watching what I eat and attempting to eat healthier.”

What has surprised you the most about being part of the CrossFit 317 community?
“The friendships and the diversity.”

Did you have a moment where you knew CrossFit was for you?
“I love being pushed and leaving every class sweating and feeling like I have accomplished something. I tell everyone that you can go tot he gym and “pretend” to work out for an hour and go through the motions. That’s not going to happen at CrossFit, you will be challenged by the routine, the instructor, and others in the class. I feel like I’m getting a full body work out all of the time and I’m being pushed daily to set new PRs.”

What advice would you offer someone that’s considering CrossFit 317?
“Give it a try, you wont be disappointed. It’s a unique totally body work out and the best hour you will spend of the day for yourself!”

Besides coming to class, what do you enjoy doing in your free time? Any hobbies?
“I love sports and avidly follow the Cincinnati Bengals (season ticket holder), Cincinnati Reds and Syracuse Orange. I also love live music/concerts and traveling the country/world.”
