November Athlete Of The Month

“I love coming to class and seeing what I can accomplish.”

We’re thrilled to announce that Grace Kaufmann is our November Athlete Of The Month! After moving from our CrossFit Kids program in to our regular classes, she’s become a great part of the afternoon crew. Read on and it’s easy to see why Grace is deserving of this recognition!

How did you get started with CrossFit?
“I started doing CrossFit in the summer of 2014 when I was ten.  I wanted to try CrossFit because occasionally I would have to go to CF317 with my mom and I would watch her.  I really wanted to try it after watching my mom and the other athletes.  I actually started in the kids’ class at CrossFit 317 and about a year later, I decided that I wanted to challenge myself more, so I started doing the adult classes.”

Favorite movement or workout?
“My favorite movement is probably a clean.  I love cleans and this is also the PR I am most proud of.”

Least favorite movement or workout?
“My least favorite movement is either thrusters or over head squat.  Like many people, I don’t like putting the bar over my head!”

Long term and short term goals:
“Short term goal is to get my first strict pull-up.  Coach Andrew has been helping me with ways to scale pull-ups in a workout so that I can get stronger.  My mom won’t let me kip in a workout until I can get my first strict pull-up!

A long-term goal is to compete in a CrossFit competition.  My brother, Jack, competed when he was 12 years old in a CrossFit teens’ competition and I think that would be really fun.”

What would you tell someone that is on the fence about CrossFit and is scared to try?
“The CrossFit community is outstanding.  CrossFit has made me mentally and physically stronger in so many ways.  The coaches at 317 help you push yourself out of your comfort zone.  In CrossFit you learn so many new skills and you get to challenge yourself every day.  Even as a kid in the adult classes, I feel welcomed and supported.  I love coming to class and seeing what I can accomplish. When I started, I couldn’t do a rope climb or double under or jump on a 24” box and now I can!! Don’t let fear hold you back.”

What is your proudest accomplishment so far?
“My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is definitely my 100 lb squat clean!”

Who are 3 people you look up to and why?
“I look up to my mom; she was the one who got me into CrossFit.  She encourages me to try new things and to push myself, and she is an amazing mom (love her)!!!  I also look up to my dad.  He is always willing to help me out and do really fun things with me (he is an amazing dad, love him!)! And last but not least I look up to all of my teachers but one teacher especially. Ms. Marithe, who is my Spanish teacher.  I have had her for only 2 years and in that time she has taught me so many things!”

What do you love most about CrossFit 317?
“I love 317 because of its community.  The athletes are amazing! Also, I love the coaches—if you can’t do a movement, the coaches will find the best scaling option for you that is still challenging and that will still give you a great workout. Also, I love that I know how to do movements correctly.  I know that knowing how to do a proper squat or push-up or pull-up will help me in any sport I play or physical activity I do.”

What is a quote or motto that you live by?
“Everything has a purpose, you just have to find it.”
